WHAT IS HUMAN TRAFFICKING?

Human trafficking is modern day slavery. Victims of human trafficking are subjected to force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of exploitation in commercial sex or forced labor.

Victims include young children, teenagers, men and women.  The Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA) defines "Severe Forms of Trafficking in Persons" as:

Sex Trafficking: 
The recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision or obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act, in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion or in which the person forced to performed such an act is under the age of 18 years.

Labor Trafficking:  
The recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage or slavery.

Want to get involved but don't quite feel ready? Attend our annual Breaking the Chains Conference and learn all the details about human trafficking directly from experts in the field and learn exactly how you can use your specific skill-sets to help the victims in your community!

All donations go through the Central Ohio Rescue & Restore Coalition manager, the Salvation Army Anti-Human Trafficking Department, which manages the coalition and provides direct services to human trafficking victims. All donations will be used to support the Central Ohio Rescue & Restore Coalition and to help human trafficking victims in Ohio get the treatment needed to help them recover and live normal healthy lives.

ACCESSING HELP FOR VICTIMS IN OHIO

Human trafficking is a crime in plain view, therefore, how could you tell if someone is trafficked and may need help? Can you tell the difference?

There are many signs and symptoms that can help you determine if they are a victim of human trafficking.

Here are a list of RED FLAGS as defined by the U.S. Federal Government on Trafficking Victims for your awareness:
  • Evidence of being controlled (ex: rarely alone, seems to be under constant surveillance, isolated from family & friends)
  • Bruises and/or fear of speaking for themselves
  • Evidence of inability to move or leave a job
  • Persistent fear, depression, anxiety or submissive or stupor-like behavior
  • Signs of trauma. Untreated illnesses & infections
  • No passport or other identifying documentation
  • Excessive work hours. Not free to take time off
  • Unpaid for work completed or paid very little
  • Lives with co-workers and/or employer. No privacy
  • Works in the sex trade industry or works off the books in low paying jobs.
